If you think some of the Hollywood stars at Cannes have looked particularly glamourous and stately: Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Salma Hayek – get a load of these European actresses and models. The French and Italian women really go over the top, and “chic” winds up having little to do with it. Generally, the equation goes, the less important you are at Cannes, the more you overdress or dress skimpily. Here’s a nice contrast: at a dinner thrown by Chopard jewelry at the Hotel Martinez, actress Laura Chiatti, model Eve Riccobono, and Israeli model/actress Esti Ginzberg (now working for Victoria’s Secret) really did it UP – nothing subtle about these looks. Meanwhile, American actress Michelle Rodriguez turned up in a simple black tank top and a long black skirt with a side slit in it – about as simple and as rocker chick as you could be for black tie. Viva la difference, we say. It all makes for great visuals – and fun generalizations on what it says and European culture vs. American culture. These clothes tell the story. – Merle Ginsberg
