Bacterial infections or alteration in the normal bacterial flora ofthe vagina may be due to the presence of a foreign body altering theusual acidic environment of the vagina. Removal may be performed withthe forceps or with a warm water irrigation of the vagina. Once theforeign object is moved, antibiotics are generally not needed.
Inchildren, vaginal lavage or irrigation is the method of choice toremove small bits of fibrous tissue. Removal of larger objects may beaccomplished in the outpatient setting or may require sedation orevaluation in the operating room. Analgesia or anesthesia at the timeof removal may make the procedure more comfortable.
Teenagersand older women may generally have foreign bodies removed in theoutpatient setting; however, those patients who are unable to cooperatefor an exam may also benefit from sedation or removal in the operatingroom.
Larger objects and those causing pain after placement inthe vagina may require anesthesia for complete removal and inspectionof the vaginal walls. These more complex procedures may requireantibiotics to treat or prevent infections.
